REVIEW | An In depth Look At The Advanced Retinoid 2% by The Ordinary

In depth Review of The Advanced Retinoid 2% by The Ordinary Abnormal Beauty Company 1

My skin has been on the offence for the past three weeks; oddly positioned breakouts, rough patches here and there and a little bit of confidence lost.

I have heard a lot about The Ordinary for quite some time now and trust me to open several tabs about a brand just to see what the rave is really about.

Owing to my facial skin woes, I decided to get The Advanced Retinoid 2% by The Ordinary which is under the umbrella company called Deciem based in Canada.

I have had this serum for about 3 weeks now and just only started using it this week. But before I  got this product, I did a little research of which I will take you through some compelling reasons why I did- hopefully, you might want to give it a try too.

Retinoid is a class of Vitamin A derivative used in skincare products and the benefits these chemical compounds have on the skin have been known to be so impressive;

  • They boost the production of collagen for a firmer skin,
  • They fight free radicals that cause wrinkles,
  • They keep dark spots at bay by increasing cellular turnover and which in turn rids the skin of wrinkles revealing a more youthful skin,
  • And they also combat acne.

The Advanced Retinoid 2% Serum

This serum is cruelty-free, vegan and alcohol free.  It has a PH reading of 5.00-6.00 which is quite a good PH balance to maintain the acid barrier of the skin that helps fight infections and toxins. Naturally, the outer layer of the skin is slightly acidic which we should keep that way for better skin health.
My skincare routine is about to take a new turn tbh!

According to The Ordinary;

This formulation combines two forms of next-generation retinoid actives in a combined concentration of 2% by weight”.

"This product uses Solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, a highly-advanced form of retinoid and a sustained-delivery form of pure retinol in a protective capsule system.Both forms of retinoid used avoid the irritation associated with retinoid (including retinol) use while delivering better visible results against signs of ageing".

This product claims to visibly target;

  • Textural irregularities of the skin (rough patches, bumpy or dull skin) and
  • Signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles)

In fact, the first claim is the immediate result I get when I include this in my nighttime routine. My skin feels very smooth and supple and my skin has a very visible glow the following morning.

I don't have visible wrinkles or fine lines to be able to validate its second claim- but I know that this will work as a preventive measure to reducing the signs of aging.

Let's talk about what meets the eye about this product...

  • It comes in this cute brown "UV protection" 30ml bottle with a dropper cap that helps for precise measurement so as to avoid waste.
  • It has a lightweight milky-white texture that spreads and absorbs nicely into the skin.

  • It is fragrance-free alright but you will still be able to pick up a faint scent which might be due its ingredient make-up. The scent is faint enough that you can put up with.

A Common side effect with most retinoid or retinol serums is that they dry out or irritate the skin but my skin didn’t dry out with this product.

I did get tiny rashes around the corner of my nose (the smart thing to do was discontinue) but I still used it the next night. Thankfully, the rashes have cleared out; so no cause for alarm here.

HOW TO USE

In depth Review of The Advanced Retinoid 2% by The Ordinary Abnormal Beauty Company DECIEM

  • Apply a few drops to clean palm then and with your fingertips, massage into the skin

  • They say to use sunscreen in the morning which I have been using diligently since I started using this product.

  • I use this right after cleansing and toning in the night as part of my skincare regimen. I do not use this in the morning only at nights. If you use this in the morning, there is every chance you will exposed to UV rays from the sun which will oxidize and tarnish the potency of this serum; hence why it is comes in a dark bottle.

If you are battling with rough or dull skin and want to give this a try you can get it from theordinary.com for $14.90.

Besides being impatient, Nigerian debit cards are a hassle to use these days for international transactions; so If you are in Nigeria and want to receive your order in no time, then Ije of beautyfrenzyblog.com is your girl. Seriously, her customer service is excellent and your order will get to you on time.
I got mine for NGN7,500

This is my first time using a retinoid serum and I’m open to give more brands a try with the support of my purse of course.

  1. Hi
    Nice review. It contains Carrageenan which is like 5/5 comedogenic, did it cause you to break out? Also the sunscreen you mentioned, does it leave any white cast on you. Thanks

    1. Hi Ifeanyi

      No it hasn't caused me any breakouts.
      Yes, Carrageenan is comedogenic and has a bad rap for causing breakouts....but most skincare brands can't seem to do without it. Not only does it work as a binding agent or to improve the texture of the product but it has some added skin benefits like helping to increase hydration.

      The Ordinary did warn that Acne-prone skin may experience a temporary increase in acne during the first few weeks; of which I am yet to experience, which could mean a "small concentration" of Carrageenan was used in making it. Although I will keep you updated if anything out of the ordinary happens going forward with this product.

      The sunscreen I use leaves a very minimal white cast which I can counteract by using brown powder.
